The garage door cable is an important component of any garage door system.
If we find an issue with the cable, we must either fix it ourselves or seek assistance from an overhead garage door service.
Dallas Garage provides garage door cable repair services if the cable is broken!
We probably don’t give our garage door much consideration, despite the fact it is the single largest moving component of our home and can take up more than 40% of the front-facing area of our home.
We choose a paint, a panel system, even window placement even during the design stage of a new garage door.
However, once everything is in place, we expect the garage to go up and down as required.
We can do some Spring cleaning by pulling the car in, taking it out, or leaving the door open.
It becomes even more difficult to move the door when something goes wrong with it.
If you need garage door repair in Dallas Texas, Dallas Garage is here to assist you! Many of your garage door needs can be handled by our repair experts.
What is the purpose of a garage door cable?
These cables, which are mounted on either side of the frame, work with both torsion and extension springs to make the door move smoothly up and down.
If one cable fails, it puts more strain on the other, causing it to fail as well.
The cables are connected to the garage door’s bottom and a cable drum on both ends of the torsion spring shaft.
The door lifts or closes as the torsion spring spins the drums, wrapping or unwrapping the cables around the drum.
The spring helps shift the weight of the door by winding up when it is raised and unwinding when it is lowered.
As previously said, if one of these garage doors cables break, the door will not move equally, putting pressure on the other cable, tracks, and rollers.
Even though the torsion spring is under a lot of tension and the garage door is high, changing a cable is relatively safe and easy.
Garage Door System Components
Today’s garage doors can weigh as much as 400 pounds! That’s why, when something goes wrong, it’s so difficult to shift.
As a result, a garage door system consists of more than just the door and the tracks on which it runs.
The system is completed by extension springs, wide torsion springs, cable drums, and garage door cables.
If any of these components stop working properly or fails randomly, the door can stop moving… or even come crashing down! The door will be out of service until that part is repaired or replaced, in any case.
Some garage door repairs are easy, while others require the assistance of a skilled professional that really knows the proper way on how to fix garage door cable.
Each component serves a distinct function.
The tracks hold the door in place, the springs assist in lifting the weight, and the garage door opener opens the entire thing with a single push of a button.
If the springs malfunction, the garage door cables, and cable drums serve as a backup.
Changing the Cable
Place the door in the open position and lock it before removing the broken cable.
Attach vice grips to the track just below the bottom roller to prevent the door from moving or position a ladder/scaffolding under the door to keep it from moving.
We can cut the cable from the bottom of the garage door (looped around a peg) as well as the drum until the door is properly secured (untie the cable).
Install the new garage door cable on the drum according to the manufacturer’s instructions, ravel it, and loop the other end around the door’s bottom peg.
Since the new and old cables may not be exactly the same length, replace all cables to ensure similar lengths.
We may also change the length of either cable, but this will require us to deal with the torsion spring.
We can now move forward with ease now that we know how to fix garage door cable issues.
If we’re still not confident in our ability to execute the repair, we can always consider contacting Dallas Garage to help us replace garage door cables!
